Having a bit of trouble? Let's see if we can help each other here. Four students from last year have offered to help, Ely Eastman, Natalia Kian, Christian Cortez and Tiye McKethen. You can get their contact info in my room, or they may end up posting here.

A coupe of people have asked about body paragraphs on the outline. I only included four in case yo needed them. The minimum is two, but that is driven by the way you structured your thesis statement.

Another student asked this yesterday: "With a prompt that is about the 21st century, should I still be writing in past tense? As I'm writing on the outline sheet, I'm having a hard time making everything make sense in past tense. Any suggestions as to how to make that easier?

Here was my answer:

Well, the thing to keep in mind is that technically you are writing about events through yesterday. We can presume that at best what happens today will be on the news. So really, at the moment you're writing, it's got to be about the past.

So even if you are talking about an ongoing, current situation, it began yesterday or before. So write in that tense.

I'm going to be honest: good writing isn't something teachable. It's practice. You have to do a lot of writing to get to the point where you can write well. I also recommend reading non-fiction outside of school, especially biographies. Walter Isaacson is a great choice. He uses a voice in his writing, exactly what you want in your essays. He sounds personal without losing the authoritative quality in his writing. All of his books are long, but are also easy to read. I highly recommend starting there.
