This is a great way for us to interact outside of class about the book. For many of you, this is a big reach in mastering a complex reading. I'm here to help, and so are your classmates. Remember, you retain 95% of what you teach, so it pays to both ask and answer questions here. This is especially useful if you are having a difficult time meeting with a study group. Allons-y!

Ok I just want to make sure I'm coming to the right idea on what Chapter 2 is really all about. So the gist I feel of this Chapter is De Blij presents arguments about the high demand of geographic illiteracy and unawareness of where even the simplest landmarks,de Blij argues and mostly tries to give the reader some background and statistics to support his arguments by stating data collected by the nation's report card and as far fetched as Reagan's incorrect remark. So I guess the chapter was mainly getting the reader in the know about a growing ignorance in geography and what the world might be coming to without geography........AM I RIGHT?!?!

Chapter 2?
You need to be more clear about your point.
Also, please post using your real name, at least your first name.

Sorry I meant Chapter 2. How do I state that more clear? Did I used too many condenced facts instead of the stating the gist? I thought the gist was how geography is now becoming a lost art and why it should be brought back into society as far as education and public awareness. Am I missing something or that not what the chapter 1 was maily about that"s the idea i got from it

It seems like this chapter is a lot of his memories or personal beliefs.

What does it mean to look at the world spatially?

I'm not really sure if this is right, but I took viewing the world spatially to mean that geographers saw the world as one huge, geometric plane. It helped me to think of how other professions (such as people in economics and the history field) thought about their fields and how it compared to how geographers saw theirs. Hope this helped!

On page 18, de Blij says "I often cite that old canard about war teaching geography, but in our case we must add a word: belatedly." I was really confused about what de Blij implied by this, can someone give me some insight, please? Thanks.

I think that he's trying to say that we learn the most geographically or realize what we should have seen after we make the mistakes or in the case enter the war.

I don't understand the difference between the first two traditions on page 7. The first one is how we interact with the environment and each other and the second one is the relationships we have with the environment and each other. Isn't interacting the same thing as relationships?? Can someone explain that to me?

Well i think interaction is how we accustom with like stuff like climate changes and like how people know that their area are at risk of natural disasters but chose to stay, like stuff relating to how people dress or act according to seasonial changes.Ummm maybe realationships refers to like how we treat our environment and how the invironment influences our cultures.

On page 9, De Blij talks about a physiologist named Jared Diamond and I can't figure out why! Can anyone see the significance in that? Is he just giving examples of times people -not geographers- have tried to spatially analyze things and mess up?

Can someone please suggest a good studying technique for me? Also, I know the definition of metacognition but can someone use an example to explain it? Thanks.

Hi Abbey!
Most people are probably on the chapter three forum now.
As for studying, you need to know that what works for others may not work for you. This year is about finding that. Look over and try some of the other techniques on the "study assistance" page. All you know for sure now is that you need to work harder than you did for the last test. But it gets easier, hacking through the jungle, right?
The easiest way to understand meta cognition is; "thinking about thinking." That is to say, constantly be aware of how you are processing information. Ask yourself, "do I get this? can I explain it to someone else?" And if either answer is "no", then go back to the information and work it in a new way.
By the way, be sure you can write out the definition of an academic thesis, all five parts. And define the prompt verbs as I defined them in the handout. All of it is on the writing page.

Does anyone know what off shoring is? I asked a couple people and we all have different answers. The definition I have is : being in a foreign country.
Is that right? If not, what is ?

Sorry Christine, I just noticed your post.

I'm not teaching this class at HSPVA this year. Check in with Ms. Chase at Chasetheworld.org.
