BPQ 1: How did the histories of the Byzantine Empire and Western Europe differ during the era of third-wave civilizations? (I hope I got this right...)

In what respects did byzantium continue the patterns of the classical roman empire? in what ways did it diverge from those patterns?

Oh don't forget that Byzantium continued Rome's long political and military struggle with Persia! Other than that your answer looks A+! :)

I like your comparison to T'ang China. That's a good catch. This idea of a return to the good ole days is a reoccurring theme in legitimizing new ideas/systems. You will see it again, this year and beyond. Romanticism for example was a literary movement that hardened back to this period in European history. Ironic, right?

Reading this chapter, I found it a bit difficult imaging the size fluctuations of the Byzantine Empire. Fortunately, I found this handy animated map of the Roman Empire. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GylVIyK6voU Halfway through the video, the eastern and western split occurs. I was surprised at how small Byzantium seemed in relation to the other large states we've been learning about. Anyway, hope it helps!)

Another little bit would be that the Byzantine Empire spread their religion (Orthodox) to Slavic/Northern peoples (Kievan Rus).

Just to reward these few, very few, quality responses, I'll throw you little scamps a bone...How did Eastern Orthodox Christianity differ from Roman Catholicism?
