The state of American Education

What's missing is rigor and teaching kids to think critically. Here are two interesting and recent articles about the state of American education.
The Economist.

I especially like the ASCD article. Critical thinking is something that is absent in the workplace these days, and that is why I have emphasized it so strongly with my boys for years now. They are used to me asking the "why" questions of them, and relating choices and consequences / situation and intent, and accountability.

My son really enjoys your class because it makes him think and draw conclusions. We've had numerous discussions (since last year) based upon conversations you've had in class. He now initiates them when something comes on the news. I love it!

Education in this country has taken a nose dive as the sphere of influence and control by a narrow faction at the top of business and government has increased. If the goal is to keep us poor and ignorant as a society, mission accomplished.

Thanks for all you do to stretch their brains!
