KONY2012 is a "No-Go" for Bingham and the HSPVA Community organization.

I asked my students to make a post over the break expressing their plans and ideas regarding the Invisible Children organization's KONY2012 campaign. Not a single person made a post. Hmmm. I suppose I'll take that silence to mean there isn't enough commitment to even discuss an important humanitarian issue. That means there certainly isn't enough commitment to take real and lasting action. But if that were not enough to give me serious doubts about involvement in this movement, the actions of Jason Russel force me to make the unfortunate decision that the school, my classes and I will not participate. Read here. http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/jason-russell-san-diego-invisible-children-kony-2012-142970255.html

Too bad really, I was pretty pumped about students coming together for a great cause and making their voices heard in places that matter. That's life I guess! The really sad part is that the exploitation of children that has been going on in Uganda and South Sudan will continue without action from the rest of the world or even awareness on the part of moral and caring people.

Actually, over the break I checked your website several times and got lost in it looking for the place we were supposed to post, I asked anyone if they knew but no one even knew we were supposed to post except me I guess, not to brag. I also heard about the incident with the co-founder of Invisible Children, and I really don't know what to say except this.

Sometimes fame makes people do crazy things, or maybe he just felt like running around in his underwear vandalizing other peoples property. Nevertheless, I don't see the reason for us NOT to do Cover the Night, if it is still actually going to happen. If the Invisible Children Co. really thinks strongly about saving the Ugandan children from abduction and sex slavery, they wouldn't give up because of what Jason Russel decided to do, or if they brought the whole movement to an end, they probably didn't care much to begin with. Another point I would like to bring out is many kids from our school have already purchased their packages and their posters and are ready to go, if we didn't, that would be a lot of money wasted, because that stuff is expensive.

I say we proceed with our original plans.

Agreed. I completely agree with Marlene. just because of some bad publicity doesnt mean we have to give up. I'm going to cover the night even if I'm the only one there.

In today's society, this week's new is next week's trash. MAKE A CHANGE.

I think we can do it.

I too couldn't seem to find where to post on the community page or maybe I was looking in the wrong places. But I think we should remember the original intent of the Invisible Children organization. We need to remind people not to focus on the bad publicity the organization is receiving now like Rebekah said and work towards the effort to capture Kony and save the children victimized by the LRA. Even if the media is right, that shouldn't mean that what Kony is doing is less wrong.
If continuing with Cover the Night helps, then we should do all we can to bring this to an end.

There are plenty of people in this school willing to participate in Kony 2012, (no one could find where to post, though) and despite the recent bad publicity, HSPVA should definitely participate in Cover the Night.
Not long ago, SOPA and PIPA made headlines that sparked outrage in America, and when everyone joined together to stop them from passing, it showed that the American government was willing to (eventually) listen to its citizens. We should adopt the same attitude for this issue, and participate in every way possible to stop the exploitation of children.
Even if not everyone agrees with Invisible Children, we can all agree that is has brought an important issue to the public. Thousands of people have been displaced and hundreds killed by the Lord's Resistance Army. Without outside support, Joseph Kony might not be stopped any time soon.

Please leave your name with your posts, we are all out in the open on this forum.
As to your assertion (and Marlene's) that "nobody" knew where to post; at the top of the home page of this site, in 20 point red letter it said, "watch the KONY2012 video and post your comment on the Community page. Please don't blame me if you scanned past that! :-)
I think you guys are making great points about separating Jason Russel's behavior from the IC mission. My mind is open, I'm just concerned that other stakeholders in the school, (administrators, parents, etc.) will have diffulty with the association. How would combat that bias if we went full force on the movement?

I still must say we should do a Cover the Night, if it must be, without KONY 2012 posters, but Jospeh Kony.
